- Watch Schemes
There is considerable scope for "Watch" schemes that involve the local community in deterring theft. Two examples follow that have achieved considerable success - see Contacts List at back for further details.
The " West Yorkshire Plant Theft Initiative " has been launched by West Yorkshire Police and industry following plant thefts worth £3.5 million in just one year. Efforts to promote awareness of the problem include an information video, a "helpline", a plant marking system and a reward scheme for information leading to arrests. Like many other local "Plant Watch" initiatives it is part of the Utilities Plant Theft Scheme (

To combat theft from partially built residential sites, a " Site Watch " scheme has been set up in Staffordshire by a local construction company with police support. The scheme offers £50 rewards for information leading to the recovery of stolen property or the arrest of those responsible (
